Modifier is a word, phrase, or clause that describes, limits, or adds extra information to another word in a sentence.

Easy meaning: A word that makes another word clearer or more specific.

Examples:
A good student studies regularly.
He runs very fast.

There are mainly four types of modifiers:

  • Adjective Modifier

🎨 4. Adjective Modifier

An Adjective Modifier describes a noun or pronoun.

Structure: Adjective + Noun

a beautiful girl

📌 Rule: Adjective usually sits before the noun.

🏃 5. Adverb Modifier

An Adverb Modifier modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

Structure: Verb + Adverb

He speaks clearly.
She is very intelligent.
He runs quite fast.

When a group of words works together as a modifier, it is called a Phrase Modifier.

The boy with a blue bag is my brother.
A man in the room is waiting.

When a full clause works as a modifier, it is called a Clause Modifier.

I know the boy who is standing there.
This is the house where I was born.

Wrong:
Walking on the road, a car hit him.
Correct:
Walking on the road, he was hit by a car.
